Longtime owners of a summer cottage overlooking a beautiful cove in Harpswell approached DMA with a challenge, design a new and comfortable addition to an old summer cottage without changing the character of the beloved summer cottage.

With minimal disruption to the existing cottage, the addition to the north allows the owners to visit the summer cottage in the winter because the new wing can be closed to the summer wing to save heat. The addition includes a new kitchen, stairs, and primary bedroom suite with a balcony.

Parts of the existing cottage were refinished and painted, and a similar Douglas Fir floor was used to relate and tie the new construction into old, as are paneled and bead board ceilings throughout.
