Design restrictions on the Otter Way forced traditional-style structure, but it was the clients wish for a modern aesthetic for their new home. DMA designed a modern barn house with soaring barn-like volume to take advantage of the southern exposure and solar gain. Along with contemporary design, an energy efficient envelope and mechanical system was very important to the client.
The soaring volume of the living room is emphasized by the stair treads cantilevered off a wood accent wall, seemingly floating in space. The layout of the living spaces are tailored to the clients wishes to welcome their guest into the kitchen with comfortable seating between the kitchen and dining room.
The blower door test came in during construction at an impressive 0.43 ACH 50. The project was featured in Maine Homes by Downeast magazine, fall 2021.
