Post & Beam Addition
Harpswell, Maine
Architect of Record: David Matero
Builder: Owner
An addition to the household (Grandma) necessitated an addition to a small post and beam gable house on the coast of Harpswell. David Matero was approached to integrate an in-law suite, great room, kitchen/dining, and master bedroom to the existing structure. The strong gable form of the house is maintained, and in fact, duplicated. A high-ceilinged great room acts as the connector and is showcased with post and beam details and high dormered windows. The kitchen and dining area, although part of the great room, is under a lower ceiling for a more intimate setting.
The owners did much of the construction themselves, and paid particular attention to sustainable design. Structural insulated panel roof, cotton-batt insulation, and insulated concrete slab-on-grade radiant floor heat create a comfortable environment during the winter months. The interior features polished concrete floors, hemlock posts and beams, and tongue and groove ceilings.
